About This Site

This Site

I have a number of overlapping motivations for creating this site:

I am a consummate nerd - I love computers, programming, technical and non-technical topics. I love writing about such things. This web log is a forum for,  and easily accessed online repository for my material. An idea which I stole from Scott Hanselman on Scott Hanselman's Computer Zen is that the blog gives me a central reference point for concepts and ideas, obviating the need to type them over and over again in email, etc. I can simply point the interested party at the appropriate blog entry. A clearing house for my thinking and writing, if you will.

The best way to learn is to teach - I benefit in many ways from laying out what I think I know. The areas in which I am weak, but maybe did not realize it, become abundantly clear when attempting to explain things in writing. Especially when one can make no assumptions about the reader’s familiarity with the topic.

Passing it on/Paying it forward, etc. - I have benefitted in massive ways from the work of those who took the time to share their know-how on the internet. From various bloggers to programming forums, to the now ubiquitous Stack Overflow, I have, in Borg-like fashion, assimilated the experience and college education of some of the biggest (and not so big) names in the technology arena. Shamelessly!

As I have learned, I feel it becomes my responsibility to share what I know. Everyone learns differently, and sometime just the right explanation can make all the difference. Perhaps there is someone out there just getting started who will find MY delivery about a particular topic to be the catalyst which breaks the ice.

If you are a beginner/newbie/noob – I hope you find some useful things. As I add more content, much will be aimed at the beginner. I remember my own struggles, and hopefully some of what I found helpful will resonate with you.

If you are a pro, experienced developer/technologist – Please feel free to weigh in, and let me know where I have it wrong or missed something. Any contribution might extend what I post here is desired and wanted.

“Joining the conversation” – I love to hear feedback, and to be corrected when I have it wrong. I also seek to “get involved” with the developer community, particularly open source.  I contribute often on Stack Overflow. I attempt to answer questions which stretch my knowledge. I have also contributed on the VB Forums before I moved more into the Java/C# realm.

This site was created using BlogEngine.Net, an open source blogging application, which I can strongly recommend.

Hosting for This Site

I am new to web development, and new to hosting. I did a lot of careful shopping in deciding where to host my site. I found the folks at Arvixe to be extraordinarily helpful, and their hosting packages represented the best value for my needs. I strongly recommend Arvixe for anyone who needs shared or dedicated hosting. The support team has been quick and responsive.
